evaluation

I think our media product represents particular social groups in an obvious way as it is about a certain social group bullying a girl with her own individual style. We used camera angles especially to show this by tilting the camera at the victim. We use obvious stereotypes in our film to by the groups of people we use ‘3 popular girls harshly bullying a  girl that looks slightly different and dresses in a different way’ in our story line when the girl commits her suicide a boy goes after and kills the girls that horrifically bully her, our film show that males generally have more power over women, as the boy brutally murders the three girls.

We did a questionnaire about who would watch the film and got a range of different aged people to answer to see who we would target. We wanted the film to catch the attention of teenage kids as we thing that more or less everyone could relate to what happens in the film. The results showed that older people didn’t really get the story line and would not particularly watch it but younger people say it relates to similar experiences they have seen. So as a result of the questionnaire we focussed on making the film better for young people.

With the research that we did we could better our film so it automatically appealed to the target audience. I think that by giving them the short script it made them wanting to know what happens next which is what attracts them to the film. I feel that our film was produced to the standard we wanted it to be and we are all happy with the outcome, Some people on the questionnaire said that the film had an eerie and dark feel towards the end of it after reading the mini script. So when filming we had to work extra hard to make it how they expect it.

We made the decision of which shots we would use in which parts, we decided when the camera was on girl D (the girl getting bullied) the camera would slightly tilt down to show the insecurities that she has. Also we had to think about which shots would be best for scenes outside such as when girl A is running through the woods away from the boy, we thought of using the camera rolling on a bike alongside the girl tracking her but it didn’t work as well as we thought.

I think that i have bettered my camera skills by doing the 2 minute film as i have defiantly work more on editing, I feel more confident when editing and added additional sound to our film.

Acting

Acting

In our film, it consists of two very different groups. We have the bullies and then we have the vulnerable characters. So it portray these conceptions, they actors/actresses need to be able to physically show these interpretations.

Gestures

All the characters need to use the correct gestures in order to portray the right character. For example the characters that are being bullied are more likely to be more to themselves to emphasis that vulnerability. In our film you can see that Scarlett (Rebecca) is being bullied and targeted by the other girls by the way she uses her body. Her shoulders are down and also her head. This also hows that she's is trying her best to avoid all the confrontation that is behind her. However, the bullies are the complete opposite and instead of showing vulnerability, they show a lot of arrogance and no sympathy or remorse. They all snigger when approaching Scarlett and that shows that they are completely comfortable with  making someone else uncomfortable. They show a lot of pride to what they are doing  because of their smiles and confidence. They also use intimidation by bringing their faces really close to Scarlett's when she tries to avoid the situation.

Tone of voice

The tone of voice varies in order to show emphasis. Scarlett doesn't say anything when she is with the bullies that is purely because of intimidation, but she doesn't hesitate to speak to Daniel (Josh).

Film Change

We've changed part of the beginning of the film, when Veronica is running through the forest she was supposed to filmed running, tripping then on her back being enveloped in blackness with a scream in the background, but due to problems filming (first time it got too dark, second time there were problems uploading it then she dyed her hair, so we couldn't record her for anything else) we've changed it so there is a voice over like on some other horror films like Zombieland (a horror comedy).
We've made it so after Veronica has been running the scene fades to black, you'll hear a scream with a black screen then as pictures of Scarlett move on screen titles will come up and you will hear the below speech as a voice over.

Script for the film change

Josh:
A girl, lost in pain and rage that she takes out on herself, brought to this dark place by the people who surround her.
Although there was hope she had already passed the limitation of how much she could take.
After it all, the only verdict is vengeance, a vendetta in her name.
So lets go back to see how it all began.

Pictures for editing

This was my first attempt. I used instagram first & chose the X-Pro11 to darken the picture. Then i blurred the background and put focus on Rebecca's
face and neck.

This was my second attempt in editing. For this version, i used photoscape. I mainly focused on the contrast of picture to give it a darker, more surreal look.

Logo Idea

I used the first letter of each our first names; Paige, Amanda and Rebecca.
Then par is a word used in golf particularly and the saying 'on par' means on target and we plan to be on target with our production, hense Par Productions.

sound in horror films

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1281385/Ever-wondered-music-horror-films-scares-The-harsh-sounds-tap-instinctive-fears.html

do an example with a youtube clip

Film makers have often relied on disturbing soundtracks to heighten suspense and terror in their films, like the screeching violins of Psycho and the crashing chords of Jaws.
Scientists believe there is a specific reason why music in horror movies helps scare us, so it can be quite an important component when making a horror film.

They have shown that the harsh, discordant and unexpected sounds used in horror soundtracks imitate the screams of frightened animals

The study looked at a class of noises called 'non-linear' sounds.
These range from the sort of distorted notes that come from a hi-fi cranked up too high, to the squeal produced by blowing too hard into a trumpet.

Prof Daniel Blumstein, who led the study at the University of California, Los Angeles, studied the soundtracks of 102 of the world's most popular movies - from war films and dramas, to horror movies and adventure romps.
The study - which involved composer Peter Kaye at Kingston University, London - looked at the music in films, as well as special effects and screams.
The analysis showed that horror films had the most noisy female screams - while adventure films had the most screams from men.
Horror films also had an higher than expected number of abrupt shifts up and down in pitch, he reported in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.
The study concluded that the use of these non-linear sounds was not random - but used to 'enhance the emotional impact of scenes'.
'Non-linearities are commonly produced when animals are under duress, such as the fear screams produced when animals are attacked by predators,' he said.
'In mammals, and possibly also in birds, when you push too much air through your larynx you produce these non-linear sounds and its a pretty unbluffable signal of fear,' he added.
'It may be that film makers intuitively realise that they can use these types of sounds.'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhIUfM9Dh8M
This is a clip of killings from the film Wrong Turn where main sounds are screaming and people being killed (so axes going through flesh ect.) But just before that moment comes in the background you can here screeching violins to add tension and build up to that horrifc thing happening.
Without the sound the images are qutie gruesome but not too scary, the sound on it's own however (in my oppinion) is still very scary, so together they create qutie a terrifying piece.

Film Sounds

I decided to layer 4 tracks together, to create a sound that help creates dramatic build up, suspense and tension.

There is the sound already on the film of feet running whilst 'Veronica' runs through the forest.
There is a low drone in the background to give some bass to it, making the sound louder and stand out more, it also gives it more of a musical sense rather than just sounds, it's also quite creepy and I think it adds tension. drone
There is the sound of a heartbeat which helps with the dramatic build up which leads to a cliffhanger. heartbeat
There is the sound of a girl breathing as 'Veronica' is running through the forest and therefore out of breath, it also helps with the dramatic build up. breathing

Evaluation Questionare Result

Most of the people who filled out our questionare were mainly between the ages of  16 and 18, they mainly said that the idea of the film was good good but 3/8 only said it was ok. The general response is that the film is a good idea for people of our age group to watch, but some said that they didn't really get the concept. one of the 17 year old females like the realism of the film and said she really enjoyed reading the story as she could relate it to real life situtations.

Some people responded to the questionare that they don't like some of the characters in the film, but i honestly think that the characters suit the idea for the film as they are bitchy, nasty and intimadating and we are wanted the film to come a across in exactly the same way, also more people gave positive response so we are going to ahead with the origional idea.

Universal Studios Inc. (also known as Universal Pictures), is an American motion picture studio, owned by Comcast through its wholly owned subsidiary NBCUniversal, and is one of the six major movie studios. It is one of the longest-lived motion picture studios to be located outside of Hollywood.
Founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass, Charles Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, and Jules Brulatour, it is the oldest movie studio in the United States of America. It is also the fourth oldest in the world that is still in continuous production; the first being Gaumont Pictures, the second oldest is Pathé, the third is Nordisk Film, and the fifth oldest is Paramount Pictures. On May 11, 2004, the controlling stake in the company was sold by Vivendi Universal to General Electric, parent of NBC. The resulting media super-conglomerate was renamed NBC Universal, while Universal Studios Inc. remained the name of the production subsidiary. In addition to owning a sizable film library spanning the earliest decades of cinema to more contemporary works, it also owns a sizable collection of TV shows through its subsidiary NBCUniversal Television Distribution. It also acquired rights to several prominent filmmakers' works originally released by other studios through its subsidiaries over the years. Selected clips and footage shot by Universal Studios are available for purchase from the NBCUniversal Archives.
Its production studios are at 100 Universal City Plaza Drive in Universal City, California. Distribution and other corporate offices are in New York City.
Universal Studios is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
Three of Universal Studios' films —Jaws (1975), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic Park (1993)— achieved box office records, each becoming the highest-grossing film made at the time.

Research into similar films

Research into similar films

The film that i think is on a similar story line is 'sorority row'
- A group of sorority sisters try to cover up the death of their house-sister after a prank gone wrong, only to be stalked by a serial killer.

First 15 mins

The film sorority row starts out with some of the sorority girls playing a 'prank' on an other sorority girl, from this you do not get the atmosphere of a horror film but more of a girly comedy this immediately changed when the prank goes wrong, as soon as this happens you can instantly see a change in the gener.
Through out the film each girl gets brutally murdered by a stalker who knows about the murder, each time the stalker goes to kill the tension is unbelievable as is the tension in our film when the stalker kills girl A,B and C.

I have chose this film to be the most similar film to ours as the end of both films are more or less the same.

Actual production logo

This is the actual production logo i have designed. It is an acronym of all our names. Even though t suggests some genre of music, the picture automatically allows people to think it is about filming. I have used the colours red and blue because i think they are proffessional colours and allows our company to have more vibrnace to it. This logo will represent our company, so if anyone sees it, they will know it is linked to Rebecca, Amanda, Paige film produtions. I used a logo maker online to create this, but at this i sketched out a draft in which i modified and based my ideas to create this final product.

Research into a possible distrubutor

Distributor: Summit Entertainment

Research:

Summit Entertainment is a LIONSGATE company and is also a world wide theatrical motion picture development, financing, production and distribution company within the Lionsgate group of companies.

In April 2007 it emerged as a full motion picture studio when Robert G Friedman, the former Vice chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Paramount Pictures Motion Picture Group, and others raised significant financing through Merrill Lynch to finance a full production slate and distibute its own pictures in the USA.

Films they have distributed:

  • American Pie
  • Mr & Mrs Smith
  • Step Up
  • Twilight
  • Knowing
  • Warm Bodies
  • Sinister
This list of films demonstrates films that are to some extent well-known.

Production Logo

This is my first initial idea for a production logo. It is just a draft and i feel like i can modify it to look more proffesional. Since it is a new company i think i can make the logo look a bit more valuable to us as a group. This is just a rough idea of what i would like the production logo to consist of. This is just a design i have created using microsoft word and clip art. I chose to call our production company 'RAP' because it is an acronym of all our names but it doesn't confuse the person looking at it because everything else is about film.

Analysis of a title sequence

Analysis of Sorority Row

0.47

This is a long shot used which is also a high angle shot to illustrate the fact that showing the characters looking down and they are secluded down in a mine shaft. This is the type of location, which is showing the conventions of a horror/thriller film. The particular location is a mind shaft, which creates a harsh dangerous setting as opposed to a secluded meadow.

1.17

This is a high angle shot showing the characters looking down into a mine shaft. This is a way of showing that they have obviously thrown the dead person into the mine shaft. This helps the audience be able to identify the main characters in the story because of  the intense beginning. The circle of light surrounded by darkness signifies death and the light/darkness is a contrast of life and death.

0.58

This is a mid shot showing a man about to stab the women with this weapon. This signifies he is going to kill her, but she is only pretending to be dead, but he doesn't know this. This creates a tense feeling as it is a prank that has gone wrong, which is going to result in someones death. It is a convention of horror/thriller film because someones innocent always dies.It is also a significant shot as it is the moment that the situation turns incredibly wrong.

1.26

This scene shows that the girl on the screen shot is not as happy as her peers at her graduation and is standing alone. This signifies that she is still conscious about what has happened and it is a subtle way of showing that she is a main character in the film.

Summary of Questionnaire Results

Film Questionnaire

Film Questionnaire results

film treatment-end changed

We decided to change the end of our full film treatment to fit in with the final girl theory in an non-stereotypical way, although she becomes masculine it's not to fight the villain, it's to survive. We think this will help put the genre of the film across better and is one of the big conventions of characters in horror films. This also means the ending is a cliff hanger and leaves the audience wondering what will happen next and if there will be another film.

Original Ending

The next day she stays at home, you see her watching tv, on laptop ect (fast pace) and that night her parents go out whilst she's sleeping. She wakes up to the door banging and as she knows her parents were going out just figures it was them. She goes downstairs and written on the living room wall in what appears to be blood it says 'last but not least!' Girl A starts shouting and crying, the front door flings open and wind blows through the house, she hears a girl crying and howling behind her, she runs out of the door, not looking behind her, see her running through the forest (scene 1 again), she falls on the floor turns over and screams, then a dark black figure envelopes her and as it pulls back and girl A is completely mutilated. Black cloaked figure moves away, music devil town fades on, boy from beginning of film is seen taking off a cloak, he goes into an en suite bathroom starts washing his hands and there's a shot of the sink so you see watered down blood running down the drain, he splashes water on his face and wipes it, pulls a creepy smile and the shot freezes on his face fades off and the end titles come on.

The camera stops zooming at a medium long shot, she breathes in leans her hand over and rips the knife out of her chest roaring in a war cry manner, throws the knife as blood pumps out of her the camera zooms out, her still roaring, and pans to an establishing shot of the setting, the tops of trees from the forest and a dark starless night. then the end titles come on.

Character Theory

One of the most well know theory's is Vladimir Propp's character theory which consists of breaking down character into specific groups based on certain characteristics that are present with in folk tales which is what Propp used as his basis for this study. This theory is used to help identify typical characters within a story. The characters are broken down into eight groups: the hero (the character who generally leads the narrative since the story told is about them and their quest for something e.g. 'TRON'), the villain (fights against the hero and makes the audience favour the hero e.g. Darth Vader), the donor (gives the hero some sort advice or weapon to help him complete the quest e.g. yoda), the helper (supports the hero and appears in the critical moments e.g. robin), the princess (what the hero fights for and is not often seen through the narrative e.g. Disney princesses), the princesses' father (the one who sets the hero out his quest for the princess e.g. king Harold), the dispatcher (similar to the princesses father since they are responsible forgiving the hero his/her mission e.g. obi-wan) and the false hero (the one who pretends to be the hero in order to gain a reward e.g. prince charming).

In terms of horror films this theory doesn't really fit together with the overall narrative and characters established in horror films. For instance the main purpose of a horror film isn't to try and get some sort of prize it's more about trying to survive and because of this character like the princess, the donor, the helper, the princesses father, the dispatcher, the false hero aren't often present with in horror films and even the hero character isn't often an actual hero but it's more of a case of the being the survivor at the end of the films despite often defeating the killer. The villain is the only character that is consistently present within horror films since there is always some sort of murderer or monster that kills off each character such as: Jason vorhees, Freddy Kruger, the classic movie monsters, jigsaw etc, and this character is often the character who is the most interesting and unique character since most of the other characters within horror films are simply stock characters who have one main personality trait (often with teenage character like: the nerd, the quite one, the jock, and the whore etc) and who's only purpose is to be killed in the film. Because of these reasons Vladimir's character theory doesn't relate well with horror films since those character are based on fairy tales with typical character types and stories of good vs. evil where as horror films are mainly about survival against the villain.

The Final Girl Theory

The final girl is a character theory used in thriller and horror films (particularly slasher films) that specifically refers to the last woman or girl alive to confron the killer, often the one left to tell the story. The final girl has been observed in dozons of films, including Halloween and its remake, A Nightmare on Elm Street and its remake, The Texas Chainsaw Masacre and its remake, The Grudge and Wrong Turn.
There are also examples of final girls are in other genres as well. In her book Men, Women and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horro Film, Clover has suggested that in these films the audience begins by sharing the persective of the killer, but experiences a shift in identification to the final girl partway through the film.
A common plot line in many horror films, particularly prior to the 1990s, is one in which a series of victims is killed one by one by a killer amid increasing terror, culminating in a climax in which the last surviving member of the group, a girl or woman, either vanquishes the killer or gets away.
According to Clover, the final girl in many of these works shares common characteristics: she is typically sexually unavailable or virginal, avoiding the vices of the victims (sex, illegal drug use, hedonistic lifestyle, etc.). She sometimes has a unisex name (e.g., Teddy, Billie, Georgie, Sidney). Occasionally the final girl will have a shared history with the killer. For example, in Halloween II, Michael Myers is revealed to be the brother of Laurie Strode and in Scream 3 the killer is revealed to be Roman Bridger, half-brother of sole survivor Sidney Prescott. The final girl is the "investigating consciousness" of the film, moving the narrative forward and as such, she exhibits intelligence, curiosity, and vigilance.
During the final girl’s confrontation with the killer, Clover argues, she becomes masculinized through "phallic appropriation" by taking up a weapon, such as a knife or chainsaw, against the killer. Conversely, Clover points out that the villain of slasher films is often a male whose masculinity, and sexuality more generally, are in crisis. An example would be Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.
The phenomenon of the male audience having to identify with a young female character in an ostensibly male-oriented genre, usually associated with sadistic voyeurism, raises interesting questions about the nature of slasher films and their relationship with feminism. Clover argues that for a film to be successful, although the Final Girl is masculinized, it is necessary for this surviving character to be female, because she must experience abject terror, and many viewers would reject a film that showed abject terror on the part of a male. The terror has a purpose, in that the female is 'purged' if she survives, of undesirable characteristics, such as relentless pursuit of pleasure in her own right. An interesting feature of the genre is the 'punishment' of beauty and sexual availability, sometimes expressed as "Sex = Death".

Our film goes against this theory as the last girl alive is the meanest and most sexually available, however like the thoery says one girl survives, not because she becomes masculinized and fights off the killer but because the killer leaves her to die and she gathers her strength rips out the knife that would potentially kill her and goes off into the night, so after her confrontation she becomes masculinized.
