Character Profile - Daniel Newman (boy)

Name: Daniel Newman
Age: 16
Gender: Male

Description: moderately good looking, a bit strange and geeky/nerdy.

Role in story: A mixture between the protagonist and antagonist (suggested by Goffman's character theory) as he kills the bullies but he does it as an act of revenge on behalf of Scarlett, who he meets in the school library as he realises she has a love for books and punk music like him and he automatically becomes protective over her, so the audience shouldn't dislike him.

Personality: Shy, quiet, reserved, intelligent, kind, protective, doesn't like confrontation, bit geeky, not many friends and doesn't like getting close to people (also gets bullied sometimes)

Hobbies: Reading war stories, watching horror films, plays guitar, listens to rock music, helps out in the school library.

Family: He's an only child and his parents are together but work a lot so he spends a lot of time alone.

Character Profile - Scarlett Mason (Girl D)

Name: Scarlett Mason
Age: 16
Gender: Female

Description:  not particularly pretty, wears dark make up, looks a bit weird and nerdy, wears school uniform properly.

Role in story: She's a type of dispatcher as she's the reason Daniel Newman goes on a killing spree, as this is similar to going on a quest (and thats's what the dispatcher does, sends people on quests as suggested by Propp's character theory.) She gets bullied by Bianca, Veronica and Jeneva which leads to her committing suicide. She meets Daniel near the beginning in a library and bond over their love for books, although they like different genres, and punk music.

Core traits: Quiet, shy, quite intelligent, likes books, likes punk music, hasn't got many friends, has self harmed in the past, not particularly confident, doesn't like confrontation.

Character subtext: Watches horror films, quite a creative person, has some problems at home and has been known to run away but nothing major she just doesn't like confrontation, she also has no siblings.

Character Profile - Jeneva Williams ( Girl C )

Name: Jeneva Williams

Age: 16

Occupation: Student

Appearance:
  •  Female
  • Black Caribbean
  •    Black Curly hair
  •   Brown eyes

Back Story
Jeneva is more of a ‘people pleaser,’ she puts others first and would do anything to fit in. She used to get bullied for her appearance, but as she grew up she became involved with the wrong group. She now hurts others to make herself fit in more.  Her family in Jamaica has brought her up very traditionally; Jeneva’s family is mainly in Jamaica. Her mother and father live in England. Her mother and father have divorced and she lives in two separate houses.  Their divorce has made a huge impact on her life and she has held in a lot of hurt so she addresses her anger in horrible ways.

Personality Traits
Jeneva has a very bubbly personality and is always smiling, that is on her good days. She also has a very arrogant, argumentative edge, which is not very pleasant towards others. Through the disguise she uses to hide her true self, she is also a very intelligent girl who also has a very caring side to her.

Involvement
Jeneva is in a gang who bully a young girl called Scarlett. On their way home, Jeneva goes onto Facebook and then discovers that Scarlett has hung herself. Jeneva follows the crowd and they still continue saying abusive remarks towards the death of Scarlett. One of the girls experiences a brutal experience, which results to death. Jeneva plays the very paranoid character and seems to immediately guess that all the bad things happening to the girls is due to the death of Scarlett. Jeneva wakes up to the sound of her phone buzzing with a message from Veronica saying 'help me, I'm at the old farm, I need you!' (Spelt badly as though it's being rushed), Jeneva tries to call her and when the phone answers she can hear screaming. Jeneva runs to the old farm with a dissolve shot to pass time, when she's there she looks around but can't see or hear girl A then she spots girl A's phone in-between the flour grinder which then drops and crushes her to death.

Analysis

first 10 mins
second 10 mins

The first title is the production company DDLC which zooms out from the lion on the logo. After that it goes straight into the film with very gentle music playing in the background and sounds of nature and two children, setting a light mystical mood (which is contrasting to the genre). At the beggining the shots of the forest and stream fade into eachother only lasting a few seconds each (the first shot is a spider in a web which I think is a metaphor for the film). The title 'Hannibal Rising' fades onto the screen, on top of two background pictures of the forest and lasts about 10 seconds.
Most shots at the beggining go straight from one to another, they're quite smooth and use sound bridges.
From the first fifteen minutes of the film it isn't fully obvious what genre the film is, it could be a war or sad film, the main clue that it is a horror is when one of the gang members insinuates that they may have to eat one of the children.
You don't see any of the typical characteristics or iconography for a horror film in the first fifteen minutes.
From watching the firslt fifteen minutes of the film you would assume, like our film, it would be a 15 as there aren't any sexual scenes, there isn't much swearing however there are some scenes of mild violence and it insinuates that things may get worse.
